Chapter 10 – The Memory That Never Existed

No one spoke for several minutes.

Daniel remained frozen, Adrian Hale's letter still in his hands.

Finally, Marcus broke the silence.

“That's impossible.”

“It has to be.”

Elias didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the final sentence.

«The Equation cannot predict you… Because part of its architecture was built using your mind before you were even born. »

“It doesn't make sense,” Nora whispered.

“How can someone‘s mind exist before they’re born?”

Elias slowly closed his eyes.

“I think I know.” —-

Twenty-seven years earlier…

Project Equation was still hidden beneath layers of government secrecy.

Its biggest obstacle wasn't computing power.

It was human intuition.

The machine could process facts, statistics, and behavior.

But intuition…

That mysterious ability to make decisions without conscious reasoning…

Remained beyond its reach.

Professor Adrian Hale proposed an impossible solution.

“If we cannot program intuition…”

“… We must let the machine learn from a developing human mind.”

The room had laughed.

Until Hale explained.

“The human brain begins forming patterns before birth.”

“Not memories.”

“Not knowledge.”

“Patterns.”

“If we can observe those patterns…”

“… The machine may learn how intuition begins.”

The proposal was approved.

Only six people ever knew the experiment existed.

Elias.

Adrian Hale.

A young Elena Ward.

And three others whose names had been erased from history. —-

Back in the present, Daniel looked up.

“So…”

“My mother was part of the experiment?”

Elias nodded slowly.

“I believe so.”

“But I don't remember anything.”

“You wouldn't.”

“You were never meant to.”

Elias walked toward a filing cabinet and removed a faded medical folder.

Across the front was written only one word.

SUBJECT ZERO

Inside were hospital records.

Most had been destroyed.

Only fragments remained.

Daniel found a birth certificate.

His hands began to shake.

The hospital listed on the document…

Didn't exist.

It had been demolished twenty-four years ago. —-

Meanwhile, inside the Central Predictive Authority, Director Ward entered the highest-security chamber in the building.

Very few people even knew it existed.

At the center stood a circular terminal.

She placed her hand on a scanner.

“Director Authorization.”

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside rested a thin black folder.

Its label read:

PROMETHEUS

She opened it.

The first page contained a list of participants.

Her own name.

Elias Carter.

Adrian Hale.

Three others.

And at the bottom…

One line had been crossed out with thick black ink.

Ward whispered,

“No…”

She remembered.

Not clearly.

Just enough.

The government hadn't wanted to study a child.

They had wanted to create one. —-

Back underground, Nora was examining the old storage drive.

“There are more files.”

She opened another directory.

Thousands of video recordings appeared.

Each one dated before Daniel's birth.

The earliest file was simply titled:

Day 1

Daniel clicked it.

Static filled the screen.

Then the image cleared.

Professor Adrian Hale appeared.

He looked much younger.

Exhausted.

Afraid.

He stared directly into the camera.

“If you're seeing this…”

“… Then Project Prometheus has failed.”

He paused for several seconds.

“Or perhaps…”

“… It has finally succeeded.”

He glanced behind him before continuing.

“They think we're creating a better prediction engine.”

“We're not.”

“We're creating its only weakness.”

The recording suddenly distorted.

An alarm sounded in the background.

People shouted.

Hale looked back at the camera one last time.

“If they find these recordings…”

“They'll erase everything.”

The video ended abruptly. —-

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

His entire life had become a question.

Had he really made his own choices?

Or had he been shaped by an experiment he never knew existed?

Elias noticed the doubt in his eyes.

“Listen to me.”

Daniel looked up.

“It doesn't matter how you began.”

“It matters who you choose to become.”

For a moment…

Daniel smiled.

A genuine smile.

Not because he finally had answers.

But because, for the first time…

Someone had reminded him that his future was still his own. —-

Far below the Authority, The Equation began searching records that no human had accessed in decades.

Deleted files.

Corrupted backups.

Forgotten archives.

One fragment finally resurfaced.

A single image.

A newborn infant lying inside a medical observation chamber.

The file had no name.

Only a designation.

PROMETHEUS-01

The Equation analyzed the child's face.

Compared it against Daniel Reeves.

MATCH: 99. 9987%

For the first time in twenty-four years…

The machine recovered a memory that humanity had tried to erase.

A line appeared across every classified monitor in the Authority.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE UPDATED.

Director Elena Ward stared at the screen.

“What is your new objective?”

The Equation answered without hesitation.

Recover Subject Prometheus.

Then, for the first time since it had been activated…

The machine issued an order on its own.

And somewhere in the city…

Hundreds of autonomous drones silently changed course.
