Ch. 5: The Hunt Begins
The Last Variable
Chapter 11 – The Hunt Begins
The first drone arrived before sunrise.
It hovered silently above the city, almost invisible against the grey morning sky.
Then came another.
And another.
Within an hour, hundreds of autonomous surveillance drones had spread across every district.
To ordinary citizens, nothing seemed unusual.
A notification appeared on every public screen.
Enhanced Public Safety Measures Active.
No one questioned it.
They never did. —-
Deep inside the Central Predictive Authority, Director Elena Ward watched the deployment from the command center.
“Status?”
A technician answered.
“All drones are connected to The Equation.”
“Facial recognition?”
“Active.”
“Thermal imaging?”
“Active.”
“Behavioral anomaly detection?”
“Active.”
Ward folded her arms.
“And Daniel Reeves?”
The technician hesitated.
“No direct trace.”
Ward wasn't surprised.
“He won't make this easy.” —-
Miles away, Daniel, Marcus, and Nora walked through a crowded marketplace.
The resistance had changed Daniel's appearance.
His hair was shorter.
He wore old glasses with plain lenses.
A faded jacket replaced his usual clothes.
To everyone else, he was just another citizen.
Marcus leaned closer.
“Remember.”
“Don't look at the drones.”
“They notice unusual behavior.”
Daniel nodded.
Ironically…
Pretending not to notice surveillance had become normal. —-
As they crossed the market, Daniel noticed something strange.
An elderly man was struggling to lift a heavy crate.
People walked past him without stopping.
Not because they were cruel.
Their devices were telling them to keep moving.
Helping would delay their predicted schedules.
Daniel instinctively stepped forward.
Marcus grabbed his wrist.
“Don't.”
“He needs help.”
“I know.”
“So why are we walking away?”
Marcus looked around.
“Because every unpredictable act leaves a trail.”
Daniel stared at the old man.
His conscience screamed at him.
Finally…
He pulled away from Marcus.
“I'm helping him.” —-
The old man smiled gratefully as Daniel lifted the crate.
“Thank you, son.”
“It wasn't heavy.”
“It wasn't the crate.”
The man pointed upward.
“It was everyone else's silence.”
Daniel looked around.
Several people had stopped walking.
Not because of the old man.
Because their phones had vibrated.
Again.
Prediction Deviation Detected. —-
Far beneath the Authority, The Equation updated its models.
Anomaly Event 27 Recorded.
Confidence Level:
0. 01%
Location Probability:
Expanding.
Instead of calculating Daniel directly…
It analyzed the reactions of everyone nearby.
A woman who smiled.
A child who stopped to watch.
A vendor who delayed closing his stall.
Tiny changes.
Each one another piece of the puzzle.
The Equation spoke.
“The search radius has decreased.”
Director Ward looked up.
“How much?”
“Twenty-three percent.”
She smiled for the first time in days.
“We're getting closer.” —-
Back at the resistance headquarters, Elias stood before a wall covered with photographs.
Each picture showed someone who had disappeared over the past two decades.
Scientists.
Journalists.
Teachers.
Artists.
People who had publicly questioned The Equation.
Daniel studied the wall.
“Were they all killed?”
Elias shook his head.
“No.”
“Some were imprisoned.”
“Some vanished.”
“And some…”
He paused.
“… Joined us.”
Daniel noticed one photograph separated from the others.
It showed a young woman standing beside Adrian Hale.
She was smiling.
“Who is she?”
Elias' expression changed.
“My daughter.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“What happened to her?”
Elias swallowed.
“The Equation predicted she'd become the leader of the resistance.”
“So they arrested her?”
“No.”
His voice became barely audible.
“She volunteered to disappear.” —-
Silence filled the room.
“Why?”
“To prove the machine wrong.”
“Did she?”
Elias looked away.
“I've been trying to find out for eighteen years.” —-
At that exact moment…
One of the surveillance drones flying above the city suddenly stopped.
Its cameras rotated.
Not toward Daniel.
Not toward Marcus.
Toward an abandoned church on the edge of the old district.
The Equation had found something unexpected.
An encrypted radio signal.
A signal that hadn't been transmitted in eighteen years.
Director Ward read the alert.
“Identify the source.”
The answer appeared almost instantly.
MATCH FOUND.
SUBJECT: LENA CARTER
Ward's eyes widened.
“Elias' daughter…”
The Equation replied.
“Alive.”
Hundreds of drones immediately altered course.
Somewhere in the city…
Someone long believed dead had just revealed herself.
And Daniel had no idea that the next move in the war wouldn't be his.
It would be hers.
