Ch. 3: Symbols on Vellum

“You found it.” Row‘s voice, the next morning, wasn’t a question.

Elena had brought the map down to the counter, laid flat under the brass lamp, and watched Row's face when she saw it — watched the careful stillness settle over her like a curtain dropping.

“I found a locked drawer with my name basically on it,” Elena said. “What is this?”

“It‘s not for sale,” Row said. “And it isn’t really mine to explain.”

“He‘s dead, Row. Whatever it was his to keep, it’s not his anymore. It‘s either mine, or it’s nobody's.” Elena heard her own voice shake and hated it. “I want to know what my father was doing that he thought needed a locked drawer and a note with your name in it.”

Row looked at the map for a long moment — at the lantern symbols, at the fresh ink near the edges — and something in her posture changed, like a decision finally landing.

“Not here,” she said. “Close up. I'll make tea.”

They sat in the back room an hour after closing, the map rolled loosely between them, a pot of tea going cold. Row turned her cup in slow circles before she spoke.

“Your father wasn‘t just a map dealer,” she said. “He kept something else, too. Something that isn’t written down in any deed or ledger you'll find at the county office. There are passages under this part of town — real ones, old ones — and for longer than either of us has been alive, somebody in this city has kept track of them. Kept them usable. Kept them secret.”

“Tunnels,” Elena said.

“Tunnels,” Row agreed. “And your father was the one who kept the map current. Updated it. Decided, when it mattered, who got to see it.” She looked up. “He was good at deciding who to trust, your father. Better than most people gave him credit for.”

“And you think I'm not one of those people.”

“I think,” Row said carefully, “that he was still deciding when he died.”
