Inexperienced Hunting

Slowly, I spun the rock sling, waiting for an opportunity to attack as I watched them fight wildly.

‘What a tragedy, so much power wasted in their hands’

I thought when I watched them act without showing even an ounce of intelligence since although they possess strength, skill, and instincts keen enough to avoid the assaults of their enemies from mere inches away, they do not bother to fight with due seriousness.

They have the ability to easily deal with felines if used in groups of three against each other, but they do not.

Fools who do not understand how important their work is for the survival of the inhabitants in the cave, as hunting is just a game for them. A competition in which the most skillful is the winner, the one who can proudly rise above the others while holding high his trophy obtained with his own hands.

That’s stupid, useless, and an absolute waste of time. However, it bothers me to think that I empathize with them.

‘While my mind, my soul dominates over the actions of the body, it is able to send signals of emotion and envy to my brain, urging me to imitate them’

Due to that, despite knowing that with my usual technique, it would be very challenging to hit it, at this moment, I am much more focused than when I was practicing.

‘I do not want to fail. I do not desire to lose this prey within my grasp because of the muscle-bound idiots’

I swallowed saliva because my stomach was beginning to growl and, enduring the burning in my eye from the sweat that had crept into it, I forced my neurons to work vigorously to perceive the world with slowness and utmost detail, all so as not to miss even the slightest of its oversight.

So, just as the beast retreated until its hind legs touched the trunk of a tree to avoid being hit by the two burly men who pounced on it at the same time, I, putting the durability of the weapon in my hand to the test, forcefully hurled the stone at its head, in a shot that had amplified its potency after numerous turns.

Once I completed my goal, without waiting for the blow to connect, I immediately threw myself to the side, hiding in the thick brush to avoid unwanted attention.

Even so, although I lost the opportunity to see it, diffused to occur between screams and grunts, I managed to hear the sound I was waiting for.

‘I missed’

I realized this when I discerned that the thud came from two solid objects colliding against each other. It was that of a stone hitting wood.

Frustrating and even a little sad, but it was not useless since, as a result, a roar of pain resounded in the place. So, without needing to get up to see it, I understood that although my shot did not hit the target, it called the feline’s attention, causing it to get distracted and let itself be beaten by its other opponents.

That was a good attack, which strategically couldn’t have been better…

”Fuck”

Releasing a heavy sigh and profanity in a whisper, I crawled forward to another position far from this one, as it was unsafe to attack twice from the same spot. I quickly moved, not wanting to miss the opportunity now that the two prey were still alive. Also, while doing so, I took ammunition to replenish the one I had spent.

Then, upon arriving at the new location, one not as privileged as the previous one because it was on low ground and far away from where the fight was taking place, I proceeded with a repetition of events, taking the weapon I had kept, I put a stone inside it to then spin it, waiting for the right moment to attack.

Unfortunately, however, it never came.

The truth is that I was not surprised that this was the case. After all, this result was normal, considering that the number of individuals that made up the hunting party was much higher than the three beasts, but… wow, this result left a bad taste in my mouth.

To make matters worse, because of the excitement of the moment, I gave the rock sling an excessively rough treatment, so it eventually broke before I could use it a second time.

‘Yes, I was still carrying a few spare ones, but the fact that they get damaged so easily doesn’t stop being annoying… Okay, you’re right. It’s not worth continuing to cry since the hunt has just begun. So, although I couldn’t defeat one right now, I’ll surely manage to do it with the next ones’

Having received the motivation I needed, I walked over to where the others were while wiping off the leaves and dust that had clung to my clothes.

Thus, with all of us grouped, I had to wait for a while until they decided who would be in charge of carrying the bodies back before we continued on our way.

Now, what happened next can be summarized in a few words, which are: I need to continue practicing.

Contrary to what I previously thought, the first shot I took, which I regretted missing, was actually the most accurate shot my current self can take, as it was taken when I was in my best condition.

That is why, although I didn’t hit it, the rock passed close enough to scare it, but the others I did with a weary body and mind, on the other hand, didn’t even come close to achieving that. They passed far from the targets, and some even hit the idiots who obstructed their path. A shot I didn’t hate to have connected, but I did worry that they would find out it was me who did it.

Therefore, I had to conclude that my labors of the day turned out to be unproductive or maybe disruptive, as the little help I could give was countered by the problems I caused with my missed shots.

In the end, not finding the enemy that had attacked them, the big dunces eventually started fighting among themselves, blaming each other.

‘While it was amusing to watch their antics, it wasn’t that we missed much of the dinner due to the unexpected delay’

What a misfortune, really a disgrace. Ultimately, motivation is not always enough for a strong performance.
